Johnny Chapman, better known as Johnny Appleseed, was born in Massachusetts. When he was young, his mother took him for walks in the woods. He liked looking at plants and animals.
At age 20, he headed west, traveling along the Ohio Valley through the states of Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois, planting apple seeds.
For 49 years, he traveled planting seeds and growing apple trees so that people on the western frontier would have nutritious apples to eat.
His goal was that no one would go hungry. Appleseed lived a simple life and was very loved for his generosity.
